Details: John Thompson, a prisoner for 14 years, was indicted for wilful and corrupt perjury, committed on the 6th of the present month, by voluntarily making an affidavit that Thomas Green, a constable at Hawkesbury of known good character, in concert with Thomas Houlding and William Douglas had persuaded him to defraud Mary Ware of a sum of money while he had charge of her premises and property, and that he had given to Green a certain number of dollars, making part of that property ; whereas it had since appeared clearly that he had by that affidavit committed the crime of perjury, and when arraigned pleaded guilty to the indictment. The Court cleared ; and at re opening the Judge Advocate expressed a thorough detestation at the horrible nature of an offence, which carried with it an evident design of sheltering his own perfidy at the expence of three innocent persons whom his crime had impiously implicated. Heinous as the offence was, yet the Law did not extend to capital punishment ; but it was nevertheless necessary by the severest example to impress others with proper detestation of his crimes :—he was sentenced therefore to stand one hour in the pillory, to which his ears are to be nailed; and afterwards to receive 1200 lashes. (N.B. - There were two prisoners by the name of John Thompson who arrived on the Coromandel. John Thompson who was tried in Lincoln in 1802 and sentenced to 14 years transportation and John Thompson who was tried at Middlesex in 1803 and sentenced to 7 years transportation)
